You may return non-food items within 30 days of delivery for a full refund.
We will pay the return shipping cost if the return is a result of our error (i.e. damaged, defective, or incorrect item). Otherwise, the customer is responsible for shipping fees.
Please note: we cannot accept returns on certain items, including:
• ANY FOOD ITEM
• Any product missing the serial number or UPC.
In addition, we will only issue partial refunds for the return of certain items, including:
• Any item that is returned more than 30 days after delivery.
• Any Item that is not in its original condition: damaged or missing parts.
All items are shipped from our facility in Boulder, Colorado. Transit times vary depending upon geography and shipping method. Please allow 1-4 days for processing.
After processing please allow:
1-5 days for UPS GROUND depending on where you are in the country
1-5 days for US Postal Service Priority Mail.
Please note: UPS/FedEx cannot ship to a PO Box. If you're shipping to a PO Box, your only shipping option is US Postal Service.

1. What is the shelf-life of Backpacker’s Pantry?
Pouches: Our new pouches (produced 2017 and later) have a shelf life ranging from 3 years to 10 years from the date of manufacture depending on the product.
Factoids: With a nitrogen flush, vacuum seal and included oxygen absorber, cans provide an innovative way to safely and healthily store food for long-term needs. Our in-house chef has ensured that all recipes can stand the test of time. For example, non-fat milk may be used in our #10 cans instead of the whole milk used in pouches to ensure there are no rancidity issues from the high fat content. But for good measure, we even enlisted the help of a trusty food scientist to use their lab gadgets to guarantee our foods are safe, and of course delicious, for you to consume.
2. Where can I find the “Best By” date on your packages?
A “Best By” date is embossed on every pouch along the top seam. Depending on the style of the pouch, the embossment will either be located along the top seam or along the bottom seam. If you’re having a hard time finding it, run your fingers along the edges of the pouch until you feel the embossment. This date is our recommendation for best flavor and quality.

4. Is it possible to ship Backpacker’s Pantry abroad?
Unfortunately, due to strict rules and regulations around importing food products, we are unable to ship items outside of the United States.

5. Do you offer any gluten-free meals?
We are proud to offer 27 certified gluten-free meals! All of our gluten-free products are tested to a 20 ppm threshold and have a certified gluten-free seal on the front of the packaging. They are also listed in the Gluten-Free section of our website. 7. Does your packaging contain BPA?
No way! We have a large variety of meals and several different packaging options, but can assure you that every one of them is 100% BPA free. So go ahead, cook right in the pouch!
8. Why are some Backpacker’s pantry meals high in sodium?
Backpacker’s Pantry meals are designed for active lifestyles and active individuals. We have adventurers using our meals for all types of gnarly adventures…. Climbing, mountaineering, backpacking, cycling, paddling, hunting… the list goes on. We don’t want any of them to end up with an electrolyte imbalance and understand that when undergoing rigorous activity, high sodium just isn’t an issue for your body.
For those needing lower sodium regardless, we do have a number of delicious meals that are lower in sodium. A few of the most popular are: Pad Thai, Spicy Thai Peanut Curry w/ Vegetables, Pesto Salmon Pasta, Vegetable Medley, and all of our Organic Breakfasts.
9. Are any of your backpacking products Kosher?
Our Backpacker’s Pantry products are not certified Kosher. However, we do have a large assortment of spice blends that are certified Kosher. They can be found by visiting our sister company: Colorado Spice.
10. What measures do you take to inspect your food?
Safety to you is our #1. To ensure that safety, strict sanitation guidelines/GMP’s, allergen containment and operating procedures are in place throughout our facility. The American Institute of Baking (AIB) (an independent inspector committed to protecting the safety of the food supply) ranked our facility with the highest possible rating of “Superior”. Furthermore, all meat products are inspected DAILY by the USDA and our quality team cooks and tastes each and every batch of products being made, the same day.
11. Where are you located?
We are based in beautiful, sunny Boulder, Colorado. Our address is 6350 Gunpark Drive, Boulder, CO, 80301. All of our products are produced and shipped from our Boulder, CO facility.

15. As a company that strives to preserve the natural environment, what are some of your “green” practices?
Backpacker’s Pantry is dedicated to exploring and preserving the environment as well as contributing to our local community. A portion of every sale is given to organizations dedicated to the conservation of our planet. Our biggest contributions are to 1% for the Planet and the Conservation Alliance. We also work with various other smaller organizations and individuals.
Donating isn't the only way we give back to the Earth. As of January 2018, Backpacker's Pantry is participating with Terracycle. TerraCycle is Eliminating the Idea of Waste® by recycling the "non-recyclable. This will allow consumers to recycle and upcycle all of their pouches...all for FREE!
In our facility, we recycle, compost, and have highly efficient lighting, utilizing 100% renewable energy power. We are committed to continually making our business more self‐sustainable and becoming a net zero energy user.
16. Do you offer any organic meals?
We do… we have several one-serving size portions in our breakfast line that are certified Organic. They can be found here by clicking the following link here .
17. I have an allergy. Are your meals suitable for me?
Although we use good manufacturing practices to segregate ingredients according to allergen program standards and rigorously clean our equipment, our products are produced in a facility that processes peanuts, milk, soy, wheat, gluten, egg and tree nut ingredients. 18. Is your food freeze-dried or dehydrated?
Backpacker’s Pantry meals are made up of a combination of freeze-dried and dehydrated ingredients. The combination allows us to be creative and flexible with our recipes, while still providing a light-weight, no-cook meal to you. The first time the ingredients in our meals are cooked is with you, right in the bag, with the boiling water. The ensures the freshest and boldest flavors possible.
In addition to Backpacker’s Pantry, we also own and operate Colorado Spice, which supplies all of the spices for our meals.
19. Where do your ingredients come from?
Backpacker's Pantry puts a lot of time and consideration into the process of sourcing the ingredients that go into all of our dishes.
Our owner travels around the world in search of the best quality spices. Farm visits throughout the United States are how he finds the delicious vegetables, dairy and meats in our meals.
Backpacker's Pantry sources ingredients from U.S. farms whenever possible, our way of supporting the local farming industry. Doing this allows our ingredients to be easily traceable if any issues do arise as well as ensure that they are being responsibly grown.
Can I have an example? Green chilies in our Santa Fe Chicken, Pad Thai and other delicious dishes, come from a family farm in New Mexico. The tomatoes in our Spaghetti & Sauce, Louisiana Red Beans & Rice, and more come from a family farm in California. Our chicken is 100% natural white breast meat sourced from an Indiana farm.
We have a professional chef on staff who then takes those fresh, tasty ingredients and bold spices to create unique, flavorful dishes with the nutritional content our customers need to fuel their serious adventures. A lot of thought and love go into each of the Backpacker's Pantry meals.
20. Can I rehydrate your meals with cold water?
While we have not tested rehydrating meals with cold water, we do know our meals will rehydrate with cold water, but the time required is significantly longer (one hour or more). They also may not be as bold in flavor, since the boiling water actually serves to cook our ingredients for the first time. Some of our long-distance hiking friends like to hydrate in the morning for their mid-afternoon meal, but you’ll have to experiment on your own! Always remember, once hydrated, these meals should be treated with the care that any prepared and fresh food would.
Any of our Requires Cooking Meals should not be rehydrated with cold water. These would be any egg product, our Hot Apple Cobbler, or our pancake mixes.
For best results, we always recommend following the directions on the back of the pouch or can, if possible.

22. Can I recycle my used Backpacker’s Pantry packaging?
Order a FREE Terracycle envelope for your Backpacker's Pantry flexible packaging (ships in 1-2 weeks).
Once received, simply fill it up with Backpacker's Pantry flexible packaging and send it back to TerraCycle with the prepaid shipping label that comes with it.
You can fit about 10-12 pouches in each envelope. There is no requirement for cleaning the used packaging, but we do recommend using our long-handled spoon to get every last morsel of delicious Backpacker’s Pantry goodness before shipping back and a light rinse is always appreciated.
We are currently the only freeze-dried food company to offer this program, so we’ve decided to allow competitors’ products to be sent back with ours, totally FREE for you, you recycling champion!
