So, you're the outdoorsy one in your group of friends who loves camping and hiking. Here's how to introduce your more "indoorsy" friends to the outdoors and make them want to come back for more.
You can’t get them to experience the joys of nature if you never ask them to join you. If you need to convince them, offer to do something more their speed in exchange. You’ll broaden each other’s horizons.
While you are the rock star who can gain serious altitude at a serious clip, remember your friends are new to this. Keep the outing short and stick close to home, so you can toast your adventure with a cocktail or an ice cream cone.
If you’re trying to give them the best possible new experience, make sure you take charge and handle all the details.
Make sure you arm your friends with advice on what to wear and what gear they need. If they don’t have gear, loan them as much as you can or help them connect with a rental outlet and go with them to pick it up.
When they worry they’ll never be able to pick up the hobby because of all the gear they need, assure them they don’t have to buy it all at once, but rather can build their collection as they build their love of the outdoorsy.
Make sure they bring enough water. It is recommended hikers have two cups of water for every hour they plan to hike.
Be in charge of the snacks, too. If you want to entice them with something more than jerky or granola, you could dazzle them with some creme brulee or coconut key lime pie, just make sure you carry enough water to whip up the freeze-dried treats.
While you can be the organizer and the planner, you should let your nature-novice friends be the pace setters. Go at their speed and encourage them every step of the way.
When you’ve taken a few day trips for hiking or backpacking and your friends are loving it as much as you, it’s time to try camping.
Again, on the first few outings keep it close to home (relatively) and keep it easy, no setting up the tent on a cliff.
After you’ve turned your city friends into camping fiends, all that’s left to do is whip out your phone and find the next place to explore.
